pretty dramatic, but it is what it is.
I lost all the previous posts that I had on imadsawal.com, the version that went up in 2023, in 2021, and 2018.
Truth be told, there were only a few posts, in single-digits, but yeah, I lost them, because of not keeping proper backups.
I did backup to Google Drive in 2023 and thought that would be it. And I could recover them whenever I renewed the website.
However, a bad stroke of luck meant that my Google Drive got full. I had an urgent form to fill (which couldn’t because of storage limit reached)
And I immediately deleted loads of folders and mistakenly also selected the folder with the backups. It’s way more than 30 days now, so those posts are gone for good. Also tried checking archive.org for a possible backup there, but it’s not.
A good learning point is a rule often floated on the internet:
The 3-2-1 backup rule. It breaks down like this: keep at least 3 copies of your data, store 2 copies on different storage media, and make sure 1 of them is stored offsite.
So yeah, I’ll try to back this version of the blog now. Here’s to learning from mistakes!
